Why Am I Always
SO Tired?

The (Possible) Cause for Fatigue in Chronic Illness

You wake up feeling like you ran a marathon.
No matter how much rest you get, you're still tired.
All your energy is being used just to *exist*.
Even on a "good day", you hit a wall by 2pm.

If you want to know what is (possibly) behind the relentless fatigue and why it won't go away, keep reading.

TELL ME IF THIS SOUNDS LIKE YOU...

Important note: Everyone’s body is different, and there can be countless reasons for chronic fatigue. This post isn’t a definitive answer, but it may offer some insights into one possible cause that’s often overlooked—especially when your lab results don’t reveal anything too unusual.

For many people with chronic fatigue, especially those dealing with chronic illness, one possible cause is nervous system dysregulation. This can mean your nervous system is stuck in “survival mode,” unable to shift back into a restful, balanced state. When this happens, it constantly activates stress responses that deplete your energy reserves faster than you can replenish them, leaving you trapped in a cycle of exhaustion. Over time, this drain makes it nearly impossible to regain energy, no matter how much rest you get.

If your body has been through long-term stress or trauma, your nervous system may start to view even small stressors as threats, keeping you in a state of fight-or-flight, freeze, or shutdown. This constant energy drain can leave you feeling “wired but tired”—or just utterly exhausted. (For more about trauma and how it impacts your nervous system, check out my blog on [What is Trauma, actually? ] and download my free Healing the Nervous System eBook for insights on tracking these responses.)

Common Cause of Chronic Fatigue: Nervous System Dysregulation

"When your body gets stuck in 'survival mode', it constantly activates stress responses that deplete your energy reserves faster than you can replenish them, leaving you trapped in a cycle of exhaustion."

Nervous system dysregulation is just one piece of the puzzle, but it’s a commonly overlooked factor that can play a huge role in persistent fatigue. Here are some other reasons fatigue might be lingering:

→ Ongoing Inflammation and Immune System Activation
If your body is fighting off a chronic condition, it can cause inflammation, which in turn requires a lot of energy. This immune response can feel like running a full-time marathon even when you’re resting.

→ Nutrient Deficiencies or Poor Absorption
Even if you’re eating a balanced diet, chronic illness or stress can affect how well you absorb essential nutrients. This can contribute to fatigue, as your body may be lacking the fuel it needs for energy production.

→ Hormonal Imbalances
When your body is under constant stress or dealing with chronic illness, it can throw your hormones out of balance. Cortisol, often called the “stress hormone,” can remain elevated, leading to persistent fatigue and energy crashes. Over time, this stress can also affect other hormones that regulate sleep, mood, and your body’s ability to recover.

My all time favorite way to "regulate" (balance) the nervous system is via sensory modulation exercises. Once you finish the Healing Your Nervous System Part 1 eBook, check out Part 2 for video demonstrations of a few sensory modulation exercises you can try!

MINDFUL SCHEDULING

Don’t make your life fit into your calendar—make your calendar fit your life (when it’s possible). Ask yourself: where am I leaking energy? What’s essential, and what am I cramming into my schedule because I’m bored, can’t sit still, or just don’t know how to say “no”?

Take inventory of your tasks and start setting aside intentional space for real rest. Spread out non-essential tasks, like errands or social plans, instead of piling them all into a single day. And protect those moments to recharge like your life depends on it! (Because, in a way, it does).

If you’re constantly wondering, “Why am I always so tired?” know that it’s not just in your head—and there’s likely more going on than meets the eye. Chronic fatigue can be incredibly frustrating and disheartening, (I've been there), but understanding potential underlying causes, like nervous system dysregulation, is a big first step.
